Orthodontic Braces--2. How many types of braces are there?

Types Of Braces

Now I am so free so I have the time to search anything about braces as I am having one right now.. I guess that is how all of us learn is through experience.^^

There are different types of braces that you can opt to align your teeth correctly are: traditional metallic braces, ceramic or tooth colored braces, invisalign braces, lingual braces, sapphire braces, gold-plated braces, and titanium braces.

Metal-Wire Braces
This is the most common type of braces. These braces have stainless steel brackets (can also be combined with nickel titanium) and can be decorated with different colored ligatures or ties.

They are effective, strong and inexpensive but, tend to stain the surface of your teeth. Moreover, they can be somewhat uncomfortable and irritate the gums, especially when you are dealing with canker sores.

In case you are allergic to certain metals, you can go for silver braces. Nowadays, braces with self-ligating brackets are gaining popularity because they require lesser time, fewer adjustments and reduce the need for extractions. As these braces do not include ligatures, they do not stain.
Of course this is the one that I am wearing now, It's economical enough and affordable.^^

Ceramic Braces
These cosmetic braces are less visible and hence suitable for teenagers and adults. They are prepared from composite materials and do no cause staining on teeth.

The ligatures, however, can stain. Braces with monocrystalline alumina ceramic brackets are more clear and translucent than polycrystalline brackets.

Unlike the metal braces, clear ceramic ones, though larger, are less likely to irritate your gums. On the other hand, ceramic braces cost almost $500 or even more than the traditional stainless steel braces. Plus, you will have to wear them for a longer duration.

Besides, although they are strong (can be bonded with plasma light), they cannot take certain types of orthodontic treatments. They cannot be used for the treatment of severe malocclusion as well. Furthermore, they are difficult to remove.

Sapphire Braces
Sapphire braces are best for extremely white teeth. They are as strong as the usual ceramic braces and comfortable on the lips and mucosa lining of cheeks. Similarly, these braces do no stain the teeth but the elastic ties do get stained over a period of time.

Thus, it is suggested to limit the consumption of staining articles like red wine, tea and coffee when having these braces. Stop smoking as well.

Those who have pale or less white teeth, however, can opt for ceramic braces as they can easily blend in with the color of teeth.

Gold Plated Braces
Gold sure has a more aesthetic appeal than other metals. They are great for those who like to flaunt their braces as jewelry rather than lose confidence merely due to unattractive braces.

Moreover, gold-plated braces are suitable for individuals who are allergic to nickel. These braces are stylish but costly.$$

Titanium Braces
Titanuim braces again are good for those who are allergic to nickel in stainless steel. They are as strong as the metal ones yet lighter in weight. However, they are more expensive then the traditional metal braces.

Lingual Braces
Unlike other braces that are bonded on the front, lingual braces are bonded on the back of your teeth so that they stay hidden. Hence, they are not visible all the time and do not ruin your beautiful smile. So your smile will be normal..^^

Thus, they are great for adults. You may also opt for lingual braces on the upper teeth and clear ones on the bottom because it is less visible anyway.

On the flip side, though, lingual dental braces can be quite uncomfortable and cause problem while speaking initially when the tongue touches the back of teeth.

In addition, as these braces are difficult to work with, you will have to find a skilled orthodontist with prior training in using this treatment. Consequently, the option of getting this type of braces is expensive.

Moreover, the treatment is likely to take more time. The sessions for adjustment of braces are also going to be difficult. Lingual braces are not suitable for children and individuals with smaller teeth.

Invisalign Braces
Invisalign braces basically have plastic trays that can be easily removed during eating. Thus, they do not get stained and do not cause problem while brushing. This treatment is suitable for those who do not have severely teeth irregularities.

The clear plastic aligners are custom fabricated according to the structure of your jaw. These braces do not irritate the gums and seem almost invisible. As this method does not use brackets and wires, it is more comfortable.

The cost and duration of this treatment are similar to that of the traditional braces. The plastic trays need to be changed every two weeks and should be worn at least 20 hours in a day.

Moreover, in spite of following this treatment, you may still have to wear the normal braces for a few months for proper teeth alignment.

In addition, as these plastic aligners are computer fabricated, your orthodontist (should be specifically trained by the manufacturing company, that is, Align Technologies) would only have little control over the treatment.

Although there are various types of braces, factors like severity of your problem, duration, whether there is a need for extraction or jaw surgery, dentist’s preference, cost of braces, etc. can determine the kind of braces that would be most suitable for you.
